The Godmersham Library 1908 Catalogue

Cover-crpt-CH

In 1908, a catalogue of the library at the Chawton House estate was compiled. This catalogue contains a number of those titles that were in the Godmersham Library and moved to Chawton after the sale of Godmersham in 1874.  The many books added after that time up to 1908 were also listed, and many of these books have the Montagu George Knight bookplate in them.

The focus of the Reading with Austen website is on the library as listed in the 1818 catalogue, i.e., the library that Jane Austen would have found at her brother Edward’s estate at Godmersham. We are however interested in these additional works that were at Chawton House, and some have turned up at auction with the provenance of the Montagu George Knight bookplate. If you hear of or should find any of these titles, please contact us.

This 1908 catalogue is housed at the Library at Chawton House.
